Border Collie Types, Appearance: Coat, Colors & Ears
As I want to tell you in my blog, I want to give information about border collie type, appearance: coat, color, and ears in these types of dogs. The Border Collie is a medium-sized herding dog breed that originated in the border region between Scotland and England. While there is only one recognized breed of border collie, there are many different types and variations in appearance.
- Coat:- Border Collies have a thick double coat that protects them from the weather and rough terrain. The outer coat is long, straight, and dense, while the undercoat is short and soft. The coat can come in a variety of textures, including rough, smooth, or medium. Coat texture can vary depending on the individual dog and breeding lines.
- Colors:- The Border Collie coat comes in a variety of colors, including black, white, chocolate, red, blue, and merle. The merle pattern is common in Border Collies and is characterized by a marbled or spotted coat with a base color and irregular dark patches. Some border collies may also have a combination of two or more colors.
- Ear:-Border Collies have medium-sized ears, are triangular in shape, and are set high on the head. The ears may be erect or semi-erect, with some dogs having one ear up and one ear down. This trait is called “rose ears” and is common in Border Collies.
You may have heard that Border Collie Types are known to have very intelligent, alert, and athletic natures, according to Dr. Stanley Coren, and their appearance can vary greatly depending on the individual dog and breeding lines. But apart from being incredibly smart, they are also sought after because of their brilliant coat colors.
If you want to see how they look in different colors, I suggest you don’t close this tab. I made sure to describe each color in it and also added pictures for you to see them easily.
Border Collie Types
Border collie types can also be divided into two broad types based on their physical characteristics:
- Show/Conformation Border Collies: These dogs are bred for their appearance as they are usually much larger and heavier than their working counterparts. They also have a more square-shaped head, a shorter muzzle, and a thicker coat. Show Border Collies are often entered in conformation dog shows, where their physical appearance is also judged against the breed standard.
- Working Border Collies: These dogs are also bred for their intelligence, herding ability, and athleticism. They are also typically much smaller and leaner than show Border Collies, with a more pointed head, longer muzzle, and thinner coat. Working Border Collies are often used to herd livestock on farms and ranches. and also participate in various canine sports such as agility and flyball.
It is important to note that some breeders specialize in producing Border Collies Types that are a combination of both types with a focus on maintaining the herding ability of the breed in line with breed standards.
Different Types of Border Collies
As we have discussed above, we have also mentioned that there are 5 different types of border collies. Of which all types have a rough coat, there is only one type that is smooth-coated. From this, it is clear that there are two different types of border collies based on something like the texture of their coats. Let us tell you that when they were born, they came out of other different types of border collies and they had different types of coats.
1-Rough-Coated Border Collie
As far as I can tell you Rough-Coated Border Collies have hair around their belly that isn’t even that long. Well, this feature is a huge advantage for working dogs like the Collie. Among the different types of Border Collie are the Wiston Cap, the Northumbrian, and the Herdman’s Tomie types which show thicker coats.
2-Smooth-Coated Border Collie
The fur length is also very short in most smooth-coated Border Collies types. In addition, the smooth coat of these dog breeds puts a lot of emphasis on their ears. Among the different types of border collies, the nape type is what is also recognized as the smooth-coated border collie.
3-Coated Border Collie in the middle
Usually, we have a very interesting one of the different or different types of Border Collies based on their coats. As in origin, they also have a great mix of coat textures, meaning you’ll also see some Border Collies with thicker coats on other parts of their bodies and smoother ones on other parts. It’s tail It has long hair around the ears and head, yet its body length is short and almost smooth.
4-Curly Coated Border Collie
As we should know any one of the different types of Border Collie can be identified as a rough-coated type in terms of a coat. This type of border collie also has full curly hair all over the body, back, and sides. But some collies of this type also have wavy fur and a slight curl in the middle or at the end of their hair.
5-Bearded Border Collie
We should know that the Bearded Collie is already a different type of dog breed. Whenever we call them Bearded Collies, we can initially think that this is another breed of dog too, isn’t it? Well, sometimes it does, and sometimes it may not. These are also considered separate or different types of Border Collies based on their coat.
Border Collie Appearance
The Border Collie is a medium-sized dog breed with a distinctive appearance. They usually stand 18 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 30 and 55 pounds, with males usually being larger than females. Their ears are medium-sized, erect, and set wide apart, giving them an alert and intelligent expression. Their eyes are usually brown or blue and can be either round or almond-shaped.

The border collie’s nose can also vary in color, with most having a black nose. Border Collies can come in various colors, including black, white, blue, red, lilac, and even sable.
